What is Choghadiya or Choghadiya Today?

Choghadiya or चौघड़िया, the name for the north Indian method of calculating Muhurat, is a very precise and reliable method. Its simplicity makes it simpler to use and allows you to find Muhurats without the assistance of a Jyotish or astrologer.

“Ghadi” means “clock” and “Cho” means “four” in Hindi, hence the name Choghadiya . Choghadiya is equivalent to 96 minutes. The “Choghadiya” system of ancient Indian time measurement is roughly translated as 24 minutes per division.

Choghadiya today is a crucial component of the Vedic Hindu calendar- Panchang. It tells us when to start new pujas, rituals, businesses, or occupations, or when the auspicious Muhurat falls.

Similar to the Choghadiya calendar, Gowri Panchang, or Nalla Neram, is widely used in southern India, particularly Tamil Nadu.

What are the several types of Choghadiya or Choghadiya Today?

In Vedic astrology, it is considered auspicious to be under the influence of generally beneficial planets like Venus, Mercury, the Moon, and Jupiter. Due to the influence of the Sun, Mars, and Saturn, the Choghadiya era is considered unfortunate. We are able to determine the auspiciousness of a particular Choghadiya Muhurat.

Four Muhurats are considered lucky for Choghadiya who are associated with the following four planets: Venus, Mercury, the Moon, and Jupiter. During these muhurats, it is auspicious for people to start new businesses, careers, and travel.

To complete vital tasks, avoid the three awful Choghadiya associated with the Sun, Mars, and Saturn.

Every Choghadiya has a special moment, meaning, and significance that it imparts to the world. Here is a comprehensive list of all Choghadiya:

Udveg Choghadiya

  • One of the unlucky Choghadiyas in the Hindu Panchang is Udveg Choghadiya. Anything the Sun touches might become blinded and burned by its harsh nature. Thus, Udveg Choghadiya refers to the specific period of time when the Sun is in power.
  • As such, it is advisable to abstain from performing auspicious work at this time. However, everything pertaining to the government, which in astrology is linked to the Sun, is seen appropriate during this period.

Labh Choghadiya

  • Mercury is a benefic planet, or a planet with a beneficial influence, in Vedic astrology. Mercury is a planet of communication as well as a symbol of wisdom, humor, and wit. The planet is also connected to fame and esteem.
  • For a while, it is believed that Mercury will be in your favor. We call this time of blessings “Labh Choghadiya.” It is said that the best and most fortunate time to begin an education and acquire new abilities is during the Labh Choghadiya period.

Char Choghadiya

  • In Vedic astrology, Venus is yet another favorable planet. It is linked to elegance, passion, beauty, and love. Therefore, the Venus-ruled period, also known as Char Choghadiya, is seen as auspicious. It is said that the finest time to travel and set out on adventures is during the Char season.

Rog Choghadiya

  • Mars is viewed as a malevolent planet. Mars can have a detrimental effect on a person’s Kundli or birth chart because of its fiery character. Consequently, the time frame that this planet affects is called Rog Choghadiya and is considered unlucky.
  • No auspicious work is done during Rog Choghadiya, including religious ceremonies, gatherings, and the opening of new companies. Nonetheless, it is believed that the Rog Muhurat is appropriate for defeating rivals and adversaries.

Shubh Choghadiya

  • The Hindu Panchang refers to the period of time during which Jupiter is in charge as Shubh Choghadiya. The Shubh Choghadiya Muhurat is considered to be a lucky period for carrying out auspicious rituals, including marriage ceremonies, etc.
  • Jupiter is regarded as one of the most fortunate and potent planets in Vedic astrology. It has a strong positive energy field and is linked to happiness, prosperity, knowledge, and wisdom. It is said that this beneficent planet would usher in a good and auspicious time.

Amrit Choghadiya

  • Because Amrit Choghadiya affects the intellect and emotions of humans and is ruled by the Moon, it is considered one of the most significant planets in astrology. As a benefic planet in Vedic astrology, the Moon has always had a powerfully good impact on the person whose birth chart contains it.
  • Amrit Choghadiya, or the period of time influenced by the Moon, is hence seen as auspicious. For all types of labor, the Amrit time is considered to be advantageous and auspicious.

Kaal Choghadiya

  • The Hindu Panchang lists Kala Choghadiya as one of the negative Choghadiyas. According to Vedic astrology, Saturn is one of the malefic planets. Thus, the specific period of time that Saturn is active is called Kala Choghadiya.
  • Astrologers in Kala Choghadiya caution against taking part in religious rites, rituals, or activities of any kind. However, there are situations in Kala Choghadiya where enterprises or endeavors to enhance wealth are feasible.

What Distinguishes Day Choghadiya from Night Choghadiya?

Choghadiya has both day and night divisions. Day Choghadiarefers to the time between dawn and sunset. Night Choghadiya begins at nightfall and ends at daybreak the following day.

There are times when it is not advisable to start something new, such as Rahu Kala. Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, and Kaal Ratri are examples of these difficult times. While Kaal Ratri takes place at night, Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela are more common during the day.

How Can You Identify If a Choghadiya or Choghadiya today is Good or Bad?

Any of the Choghadiya divisions can be just as nice or unpleasant depending on the time of day. There are several criteria that go into determining the Choghadiya Muhurat. The first Choghadiya of the day is determined by the ruling planet of the day.

  • The planet dominating the day governs the first Muhurta of each day. For instance, the Sun rules the first Choghadiya Muhurta on Sundays. The Planets Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars are responsible for the following Muhurtas, in that sequence. The planet ruling the day also governs the last Muhurta of the day.
  • Depending on the characteristics of the planet governing them, the durations can be either good or bad. Lucky times are usually those when planets like the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter are in power, according to Vedic astrology.
  • On the other hand, the period affected by planets such as Mars, Saturn, and the Sun is deemed unfavorable. Based on this calculation, a Choghadiya Muhurat can be either auspicious or inauspicious. It is crucial to keep in mind that certain jobs may benefit from the unlucky Choghadiya today’s muhurat.
